Matt Pincus is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of SONGS Music Publishing, a music publishing firm located in New York, Los Angeles, and London. A wholly employee-owned enterprise, SONGS brings a long-term ownership oriented perspective, leading-edge practices, and a client service mentality to the traditional music publishing business.
Under Matt’s leadership, SONGS has grown from its inception in 2004 to represent over 300 songwriters across all genres of music. SONGS’ substantial growth has been organic and bottom up, through the signing of worldwide, exclusive co-publishing agreements with individual writers and, more recently, through catalog acquisitions.
SONGS Music Publishing’s writers include Diplo (Usher, No Doubt, Justin Bieber, MIA, Major Lazer), Devin Tailes (Dev), Marsha Ambrosius, Brian Lee (Lady Gaga, Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen), Matt Thiessen (Relient K, Katy Perry, Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen), Q-Tip, Morgan Kibby (M83, White Sea), Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes) and Jose Gonzalez. SONGS publishes a wide variety of current global hits including “Good Time” (Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen, current Top 10 in U.S. and abroad), “Climax” (Usher), “In the Dark” (Dev, Top 10 U.S.), “Rack City” (Tyga ,Top 10 U.S.), “Midnight City” (M83), “1,2,3,4” (Feist), “All of the Lights” (Kanye West), “Mr. Taxi” (Girls Generation, #1 Japan), and “She Makes Me Wanna” (JLS with Dev, #1 UK).
Through Mighty Seven Songs and Mom and Pop Music Publishing (joint ventures with Crush Management and Q Prime Management, respectively), SONGS publishes and administers JT Harding (co-writer of Kenny Chesney’s #1 Country song “Somewhere with You” and Jake Owen’s #1 Country song “Alone With You”) and Sleigh Bells. SONGS operates in Nashville through Patrick Joseph Music, in partnership with legendary Nashville executive Pat Higdon.
SONGS also publishes and administers a 50% share of the Pharrell Williams catalog, which contains the global hits “Hollaback Girl” (Gwen Stefani), “Rock Your Body” (Justin Timberlake), “Milkshake” (Kelis), “Hot in Herre” (Nelly) and many others, and publishes and administers a variety of catalogs including those of EPMD, Living Colour, Das Efx and Stryper.
Before founding SONGS, Matt was a Strategy Associate at EMI Group, plc, one of the 4 major global music companies. Prior to that, Matt founded Some Records, an independent record label, and was a writer and Assistant Editor at New York Magazine. Previously, he was a member of the influential New York hardcore band Judge.
In 2002, Matt graduated from Columbia Business School with an MBA. In 1995, he graduated with a BA in English from Columbia College at Columbia University. Matt is currently a member of the Board of Directors of both the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) and ASCAP. He is also a member of the board of directors of Community Impact, Columbia University’s undergraduate community service program, and a member of the board of trustees of the Wooden Nickel Foundation, a non-profit organization benefitting cultural arts and other institutions.
