Cameron Strang is Chairman & CEO of Warner/Chappell Music, Warner Music Group's award-winning global music publishing company, and is responsible for the company's worldwide operations, including strategic acquisitions, A&R, international licensing initiatives and global expansion. In December 2012, it was announced that Strang will oversee WMG’s West Coast Operations, adding Warner Bros. Records to his existing management responsibilities of leading WMG’s Music Publishing & Catalog Development division, which includes Warner/Chappell Music and Rhino Entertainment.
Since Strang took the helm at Warner/Chappell in January 2011, the company has enjoyed a number of landmark successes including claiming the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s quarterly airplay chart for the first time and being named ASCAP’s ‘Pop Publisher of the Year’ for the first time since 2002. In addition, the company has attracted major executive talent including Jon Platt, in a newly created role of President, Creative – North America, and has made significant acquisitions such as Miramax’s library of film music.
Previously, Strang was the founder of Southside Independent Music Publishing, which was formed in 2004. Prior to being acquired by Warner/Chappell in 2010, Southside was a leading independent music publishing company with a reputation for discovering and developing numerous talented writers, producers and artists across a wide range of genres. Southside was founded with the signing of J.R. Rotem and, in just six years, built a roster that included Bruno Mars, Kings of Leon and producer Brody Brown.
In 1995, after practicing law for a few years in his home town of Vancouver, Strang launched New West Records. New West released numerous award-winning albums and built an impressive roster that includes Steve Earle, Dwight Yoakam, Kris Kristofferson, Rickie Lee Jones, Drive By Truckers, Delbert McClinton, Ben Lee, Old 97's, Buddy and Julie Miller. New West also acquired the Texas Music Group including the Antone's label and the Watermelon Label, and released the award-winning soundtrack to the film Crazy Heart. Strang graduated from University of British Columbia Law School in 1992. He is based at Warner/Chappell's headquarters in Los Angeles.
